Greenwich Angling Bridge Replacement
Jul 09, 2009
Work will commence this week on a nearly half-a-million dollar bridge replacement project on Greenwich Angling Road, just north of the South Central high school, according to County Engineer, Joe Kovach.
With an estimated project cost of $646,993, area contractor R & I Construction, Tiffin, bested 15 other bidders to win the project with a tally of $ 471,903. The work is being 100%funded through the Federal Highway Administration's National Transportation Act according to Kovach.
The County Engineer applied to the Ohio Department of Transportation for funding in late 2007. "With over 400 bridges to look after", Kovach said, “This project continues our efforts to improve the safety of Huron County's roadways while replacing as many as possible of our deteriorated bridges each year". Kovach indicated, the low bid submitted by R & I Construction was “a welcome relief in these tough economic times".
"This is a total bridge replacement project...new everything ", the Engineer said," Plans call for the new structure to be wider, span a greater distance and be significantly more capable of carrying today's heavy loads than the old steel truss it replaces". The scope of the project means R & its crews will be hard pressed to complete the bridge prior to the start of school on August 25, Kovach noted, "We're confident everything possible will be done to keep the project on time and under budget".
The County Engineer commented, “It’s always good to work with local contractors", and cited the many Huron County area firms who will be assisting R&I Construction with the Greenwich Angling Road project. "Wm. Dauch Concrete, Norwalk Concrete Industries, Oglesby Construction, Lake Erie Construction and Erie Blacktop, all have been tapped as local suppliers and subcontractors on the project" Kovach said.
This isn't R & I Construction's first venture into Huron County. The Engineer noted their previous work completing the Old State Road railroad overpass and a bridge replacement last year on Ridge Road just south of Norwalk. According to Kovach, the company's work has always been "outstanding".
Greenwich Angling Road will be closed at the bridge site for the duration of the project. County crews will maintain the detour route as construction efforts progress.
