While the folks in Washington hope students will choose to save fuel by walking or biking to school, the national statistics used, (from 1969) showing half of all students walked or bicycled to school, just aren't reasonable, or accurate, for Huron County's rural schools.
We know in Huron County fewer than 10 percent of all school trips are made by walking or biking. Instead, more than half of our students arrive at school in private automobiles or school busses. That's why having safe roadways is so very important.
While walking and bicycling to school might be a low-cost alternative to bus service for in-town students, the County Engineer's Office understands, for our rural schools, there's no substitute for a safe ride to school. And, when it rains, or once winter sets in, there is simply nothing better than a safe, warm ride to school.
As school districts across the county feel the strain on school budgets due to increased fuel prices, in Huron County, every effort is being made to make any trip to and from school as safe and efficient as possible. New bridges, new paving, bright signs and pavement markings are all part of our commitment to your student’s safe route to school.
Here's a wish from all of us at the County Engineer's Office:
Get off to a safe start ... and enjoy the new school year!
